9/20/15 Trifecta at Possum Kingdom Lake

Possum Kingdom Lake is a dramatic sight, with huge cliffs forming islands in the middle of the lake.

I raced here in 2014 and 2015, and love the course.  Unfortunately, for 2015, I had just suffered a debilitating exertion based heat stroke 2 weeks earlier in the TriRock race in Austin.  I felt pretty lousy for the few days following the heat stroke and then put in a solid week leading up to Trifecta.  The non-wetsuit swim was a good one for me, putting me fourth overall behind a couple of great swimmers, Barrett and Lauren Brandon, and my coach Brent Poulsen.  I was passed about 3 or 4 miles into the bike by Michael Arishita of Texas A&M and wasn’t able to hang with him.  He threw down a great bike split.  I felt pretty lethargic on the bike, and the run was just average for me.  I’ll admit I was a bit cautious after the heat stroke episode.  I finished in just under two hours, second in the collegiate division behind Arishita.  Coach Brent won the overall, ahead of Barrett Brandon.  I was 5th overall based on the published results, but it was obvious that someone in the open division listed just ahead of me in the results had completed the entire run course.  Regardless, I was happy to get out there and race in such a cool place!  Next, I’ll take a few easy days and then start a big block for Austin 70.3 on November 8.
